The Fool’s Story 🃏🌙
Share
Before I teach you how to read tarot, I want to tell you a story.
Not just any story. A story that’s been sitting inside the Major Arcana all along.
The Fool’s Journey.
And while I’m telling you this story, I want you to imagine that you are The Fool.
You’re standing at the beginning of a long, winding path. You can see the road in front of you, but only as far as the next bend. Beyond that, you have absolutely no idea what’s waiting.
You don’t have a map. You don’t have years of experience. You don’t have all the answers. You don’t even really know what you’re looking for yet.
But you’re curious.
Something inside you is telling you to take that first step.
So you do.
You are The Fool.
Not because you’re foolish or because you’ve done something stupid. You’re The Fool because you’re at the beginning of your journey. You haven’t learned the lessons yet. You haven’t collected the knowledge. You haven’t experienced everything that’s waiting for you.
You’re simply willing to begin.
The Magician
As you walk along the path, you eventually come across someone standing beside a table covered in strange and fascinating objects.
They look at you and smile.
It’s The Magician.
“You’ve decided to begin,” they say.
You nod. “I have.”
“Then look at what you already have.”
You look down at the table. There are tools in front of you, things you hadn’t even realised were available to you.
The Magician begins to show you what you’re capable of. You start to realise that maybe this journey isn’t about waiting for someone else to give you everything you need. Maybe you have more potential than you thought.
But you’re still The Fool. You don’t understand it all yet.
So you thank The Magician and continue walking.
The High Priestess
The path becomes quieter.
Eventually, you reach a doorway where a woman is sitting between two pillars. She doesn’t call you over. She doesn’t explain who she is. She simply watches you.
It’s The High Priestess.
You ask her, “Can you tell me what’s waiting for me?”
She smiles.
“No.”
You look confused. “Why not?”
“Because some things aren’t meant to be told to you. They’re meant to be discovered by you.”
You don’t completely understand.
But as you walk away, you notice something. For the first time, you’re paying attention to the little feeling inside you. That quiet voice. That instinct that tells you something feels right, or something feels wrong.
You don’t know what to call it yet.
You just know it’s there.
The Empress
Further along the path, everything begins to change. The road opens into a beautiful garden filled with flowers, trees, fruit and life.
You slow down.
For once, there’s nowhere you need to rush to.
Sitting amongst the garden is The Empress.
She welcomes you to sit with her.
You spend time there watching things grow. You begin to understand that not everything in life has to be chased. Some things need patience. Some things need nurturing. Some things need space.
You realise that the journey isn’t only about getting somewhere. It’s also about experiencing where you are right now.
Eventually, you know it’s time to continue.
The Empress smiles as you leave.
“Take what you’ve learned here with you.”
The Emperor
The garden eventually disappears behind you, and ahead stands a great stone fortress.
Everything is structured. Everything has its place. There are walls, boundaries and a sense of order.
Standing at the entrance is The Emperor.
You ask him why everything is so controlled.
“Because without foundations, everything eventually falls,” he tells you.
You begin to understand that structure isn’t necessarily the enemy of freedom. Sometimes you need something solid underneath you before you can safely build something bigger.
So you learn about boundaries, responsibility and stability.
Then you continue.
The Hierophant
Further along the road, you come across a gathering of people listening to a teacher.
It’s The Hierophant.
You sit down and listen.
You hear stories that have been passed down through generations. Beliefs, traditions, teachings and different ways of understanding the world.
You realise that you don’t have to learn everything alone. There is knowledge all around you, and people who have walked paths before you.
But when you eventually leave, something begins to stir inside you.
You start asking yourself, “What do I actually believe?”
You’ve been taught many things, but now you’re beginning to discover which beliefs are truly yours.
The Lovers
Eventually, the road splits into two.
You stop.
One path goes left. One goes right.
Standing at the crossroads are The Lovers.
They don’t tell you which way to go.
Instead, they ask you what matters to you.
You think about your values. Your heart. The things you want from life. The person you want to become.
And suddenly, you understand something.
There will be moments on this journey when nobody else can make the decision for you.
You have to choose.
So you do.
You pick your path and take the next step.
The Chariot
The road becomes steeper, and eventually you find yourself standing beside The Chariot.
You climb inside and take hold of the reins.
For the first time, you’re not simply following the road. You’re deciding where you’re going.
You feel determined. You feel focused. You feel like you’ve finally got this.
But you soon discover that moving forward takes discipline. You have to stay focused when the road gets difficult. You have to keep control of where you’re heading.
The Fool begins to realise that nobody else can drive their journey for them.
So you take the reins and keep moving.
Strength
Not long after, you encounter a lion.
Your first instinct is to step back.
But standing beside the lion is Strength.
You expect to see someone fighting it, trying to overpower it.
Instead, you see calmness.
Patience.
Compassion.
The Fool watches and begins to understand that strength doesn’t always mean force. Sometimes the greatest strength is learning how to work with your fear, your emotions and your instincts instead of allowing them to control you.
You take that lesson with you.
The Hermit
The road becomes quieter.
Eventually, you notice a small light in the distance.
It’s The Hermit, holding a lantern.
You sit beside them for a while.
There is no rush to speak.
Eventually, The Hermit asks, “Do you know where you’re going?”
You shake your head.
“Do you know why you’re going?”
Again, you shake your head.
The Hermit smiles.
“Sometimes you have to stop listening to everyone else before you can hear yourself.”
You sit quietly and think about everything you’ve experienced so far.
The choices you’ve made. The things you’ve learned. The person you were when you first stepped onto the path.
When you eventually stand up and continue, you feel different.
You’ve started looking inward.
Wheel of Fortune
Then the road begins to change.
The Wheel of Fortune starts turning.
Suddenly, things you thought were permanent aren’t.
People come into your life and leave again. Doors open. Other doors close. Things that felt stuck begin moving, while things you thought were certain suddenly change.
You try to hold onto what you know, but the Wheel keeps turning.
Eventually, you understand that you can’t control every part of the journey.
You can only choose how you respond to where the road takes you.
So you keep walking.
Justice
Eventually, you arrive at a great hall.
At the centre stands Justice, holding the scales.
You are asked to look back at your journey so far.
Not through excuses.
Not through what you wish had happened.
Honestly.
You look at your choices, your actions and the consequences that followed.
There are things you’re proud of.
There are things you’re not.
Justice doesn’t tell you that you’re a good person or a bad person.
She simply asks, “Are you willing to be honest with yourself?”
You realise that growing means taking responsibility too.
So you accept what you’ve learned and continue.
The Hanged Man
But then the road seems to disappear.
You find yourself suspended upside down.
You’ve reached The Hanged Man.
At first, you panic.
You try to move. You try to escape. Nothing works.
Eventually, exhausted, you stop fighting.
And when you stop, you notice something.
The world looks completely different from this position.
Something that seemed obvious before suddenly doesn’t.
A situation you couldn’t understand starts to make sense.
You realise that sometimes you’re not being stopped because you’ve done something wrong.
Sometimes you’re being asked to pause long enough to see something from another perspective.
Eventually, you find your feet again.
But you’re carrying a new way of seeing the world.
Death
The path ahead leads you to Death.
You feel afraid.
You look back at everything you’ve experienced so far and realise that you’re carrying things that no longer belong with you.
Old beliefs.
Old fears.
Old versions of yourself.
Old chapters that have already finished.
Death doesn’t ask you to destroy yourself.
Death asks you to let something end.
You take one final look back.
Then you let go.
And for the first time in a long time, you feel lighter.
Temperance
After the intensity of Death, the path becomes peaceful.
You meet Temperance.
Here, everything feels balanced.
Nothing is being rushed.
Nothing is being forced.
You begin to understand that life doesn’t have to exist at one extreme or the other.
You can move slowly.
You can find your centre.
You can learn when to act and when to wait.
The Fool begins to understand that balance is something you create, not something you find once and never lose again.
The Devil
But the journey isn’t finished.
The path becomes darker, and you meet The Devil.
You look down and notice chains around you.
At first, you think you’re trapped.
Then you look closer.
The chains aren’t actually locked.
You could leave.
But something is keeping you there.
You begin to look at your attachments. Your fears. Your habits. The things you’ve convinced yourself you need. The patterns you’ve repeated even when you knew they weren’t good for you.
The Devil doesn’t force you to stay.
He simply makes you look at what has been holding you.
And eventually, you realise that sometimes the hardest part of freedom is admitting what you’re attached to.
The Tower
Then everything changes.
The ground beneath you begins to shake.
The Tower.
The structure you’ve been standing inside begins to collapse.
Everything you thought was permanent is suddenly falling apart.
You don’t understand what’s happening.
You’re frightened.
You’re angry.
You’re surrounded by rubble, wondering how you’re supposed to rebuild when you don’t even know what happened.
But as the dust begins to settle, you notice something.
You can finally see the truth underneath it all.
Things that weren’t built to last have fallen.
And although it hurts, there is now space for something different.
The Star
That night, you sit beneath the sky.
You’re exhausted.
But then you look up.
The Star is shining above you.
For the first time since The Tower, you feel a tiny flicker of hope.
You begin to heal.
You begin to believe that maybe the journey isn’t over just because one chapter ended badly.
You realise that sometimes hope doesn’t arrive loudly.
Sometimes it’s simply that little feeling that says, “Keep going.”
So you do.
The Moon
The road becomes foggy.
The Moon hangs above you, but you can’t see very far ahead.
Everything feels uncertain.
You hear sounds in the distance. You see shapes you can’t quite make out. Your fears start filling in the gaps where you don’t have answers.
You don’t know what’s real and what’s fear.
You don’t know exactly where the road is going.
And for the first time, you have to keep moving without being able to see the entire path.
You remember The High Priestess.
You remember that quiet feeling inside.
So you stop.
You listen.
And then you take another step.
The Sun
Slowly, the darkness begins to fade.
The fog lifts.
And suddenly, sunlight pours across the road.
The Sun.
You can see again.
You feel warmth on your face.
You laugh.
You breathe.
You realise just how far you’ve come.
You think about the person who first stepped onto this road.
They had no idea what they were walking into.
And now you’re standing here having survived every part of it.
You feel lighter.
You feel alive.
You keep walking.
Judgement
Then you hear a call.
Something deep within you wakes up.
You turn around and look back along the road.
Judgement is here.
And suddenly you can see the entire journey.
The beginning.
The lessons.
The choices.
The people.
The losses.
The moments you thought you couldn’t continue.
The moments that changed you forever.
You finally understand that every part of the journey became part of who you are.
You answer the call.
And you keep walking.
The World
Finally, you reach The World.
You stop.
You look back at the road behind you.
And there stands The Fool.
The person you were when you first began.
They didn’t have the knowledge.
They didn’t have the experience.
They didn’t know what was coming.
They simply had enough courage to take the first step.
And now you understand something.
The journey didn’t make you perfect.
It made you whole.
Every lesson became part of you.
Every experience shaped you.
Every ending created space for another beginning.
You have travelled through the entire Major Arcana.
And yet…
The story doesn’t really end.
Because life is a cycle.
And sometimes, after everything you’ve learned, you find yourself standing at the beginning of another journey.
Another unknown.
Another road.
Another first step.
And once again…
You are The Fool.
And now, your tarot journey begins
That is the story I want you to keep in the back of your mind while we learn tarot together.
Because you are The Fool.
You’re starting this journey without all the knowledge, without all the experience and without all the answers.
And that’s exactly how it should be.
I’m not going to throw 78 card meanings at you and tell you to memorise them.
We’re going to take our time.
We’ll learn the traditional meanings because they matter. They’re part of the foundation of tarot and they give us the language and history behind the cards.
But we’re also going to learn how the cards connect, how the imagery speaks to you and, eventually, how to start paying much closer attention to your own intuition.
Because I don’t want you to become someone who can simply recite what a card “means.”
I want you to become someone who can read the cards.
And that starts with understanding the story.
So take a breath.
Look at your deck.
You’ve just taken your first step.
